We've been talking about Montessori principles. Here are several examples of applying Montessori principles for someone who is in the middle stage of their dementia journey.
Several keys to success:
Ensure that the task or project is meaningful to your person - not simply an empty task or something they don't enjoy or something to keep them busy; but something that gives them a sense of purpose or enjoyment
Set the environment for success - reduce clutter and distraction, ensure the space positively triggers your person, don't interrupt your person
Use real objects - not toys - though do ensure that your person is able to be safe with the object*
Use tools or templates - your person may benefit from a picture, instructions or example to help them
Expand the project or task to its natural conclusion - for ex, your person may enjoy setting the table before a meal, helping with meal prep, and then cleaning the table after the meal

*There are a number of ways to verify if your person is able to be safe with an object. Don't simply give it to them. You may need to assist them with a smaller project using simpler objects first. Or you may wish to work with a professional to understand what would be an effective approach with your person.
